Big Creek State Park
Summer recreation abounds in this Iowa state park encircling the nearly 900-acre Big Creek Lake. Your first stop at this state park is the Big Creek Marina, where you may pick up fishing licenses, bait, and rent everything from kayaks and canoes to fishing boats and pontoons.
Big Creek Lake features five boat ramps, and so feel free to reel in some largemouth bass, channel catfish and muskie from anywhere on the clear waters of Big Creek Lake. Fishermen are also always welcome on the park’s fishing pier and the 88-berth, dry-dock zone.
Not a fan of the water? That’s OK. Big Creek State Park features a plethora of trails, picnic shelters and some great nearby hunting. Rent a bike from the Big Creek Marina, or bring your own for a trek down the 90-mile Central State Park Bike Route – a paved trail connecting Big Creek State Park to Ledges State Park and Springbrook State Park.
Grab your favorite pair of walking shoes and head down the park’s 26-mile multi-use trail leading all the way down to Des Moines during your summer vacation, or take advantage of the snowmobile and cross-country ski trails if you happen to be in central Iowa during the winter. The nearby hunting areas are chock-full with pheasant, rabbit, and deer – or stay on the lake for some great waterfowl hunting.
